What is dermatitis?

Dermatitis is the commonly used label given to any inflammation of the skin. Similarly, dermatitis is typified by an array of symptoms including dry, flaky, itchy skin that may also be red raw, swollen, cracked and blistered.  If left untreated, auxiliary infection may result.

In severe outbreaks, irritant contact dermatitis may display symptoms such as swelling, blistering and ulceration. Symptoms usually erupt soon after exposure to the irritant or toxin and they are limited to areas of the skin that have been in direct contact with the offending substance.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when a person's immune system becomes sensitised to one or more natural or artificial substances. With allergic contact dermatitis, the first symptoms of skin inflammation are usually delayed for a day or two after contact with the allergen. This is because the body's immune defences initially take some time to react. Potential skin allergens vary for each individual.  Some people will not react at all to a given substance, other people react to a few substances whilst a tiny minority of people are sensitised to a vast range of varying substances.

Allergic contact dermatitis can produce a skin redness that may be dry, itchy, flaky and blistered.  Often, split skin on the fingertips or a sore redness can occur across the knuckles.   

Atopic Dermatitis

Atopic dermatitis, or eczema as it is often called, is a chronic, recurring skin inflammation condition that most commonly results from a person's genetic make-up and is worsened by personal circumstances such as stress and age.  Patchy, dry, itchy and scaly areas of skin typically identify eczema. In extreme incidences, eczema will result in open sores that weep, bleed, and crust over.

In any case of dermatitis, identifying the cause is extremely important.  Whilst treatment may result in relieving the immediate symptoms, removing or limiting the underlying causes is the best way to achieve long-term relief.  In the case of either variant of contact dermatitis, continual exposure to the allergen may produce a chronic condition.
